5 Things I Learned From the Keto Diet

I first tried the Keto diet back in the early to mid-90s when it was known as the Atkins diet. It seemed easy enough – all I had to do was cut out carbs and enjoy all the meat and fat, right? No big deal. At the time, I had no exercise regimen. I figured chasing 2 elementary school-age children across a soccer field was enough.

It was harder than I expected. For one, I didn’t do my research or due diligence. It just seemed like a quick and easy way to drop a few pounds. I didn’t have a plan. I gave it a go for about a month or so and while I did lose a few pounds initially, once I stopped trying, those extra pounds came back and brought a few more of their friends with them.

All of that being said, here are the key takeaways from my experience:

1. I learned that I had to pay attention to what I was eating.
2. I learned that I had to plan ahead.
3. I learned that I had to be consistent.
4. I learned that I needed to exercise regularly.
5. I learned that I am much easier to get along with when I have enough carbs.

Even though I was wrong about my initial assumptions, I did learn from the experience. Did I use those lessons immediately? Not so much. But that’s another story for another day.
