5 Things I Learned From the Paleo Diet

It’s now 2012.  I found CrossFit and was introduced to the Paleo style of eating.  It was strongly encouraged during my CF-L1 course, so being the team player that I am, I jumped in to give it a try.
For me, Paleo was a variant of the Eat Clean Diet – minus grains and legumes.  It wasn’t very difficult to follow and let’s face it, who doesn’t love bacon?
I found it to be more reliant on healthy fats as an energy source than the carbohydrates found in fruits and veggies.  Sugar was an absolute no-no.  And let’s not forget alcohol!  Not a whole lot of “adult beverages” are Paleo-friendly.
Key takeaways from this experience:
  1.  I learned that I had to pay attention to what I was eating.
  2.  I learned that I had to plan ahead.
  3.  I learned that I had to be consistent.
  4.  I learned that I needed to exercise regularly.
  5.  I learned that I am much easier to get along with when I have enough carbs AND a well-balanced diet that includes oatmeal and peanut butter.
So you’re probably wondering, “If all you missed was oatmeal and peanut butter, why aren’t you still following Paleo?”.   Short answer:  I felt deprived.   More on that in my next post.
